Meaning-Of-IELTS-Band-Scores

Individual test scores

Scores for each of the four skills are equally weighted. The overall band scores are calculated by taking the mean result for each part of the test.

The overall band score

Scores are rounded up or down to the nearest whole or half band. There is no rounding up of scores if the average across the four skills – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking – ends in .25.

If it ends in .75, it is rounded up to the next whole band.

IELTS Academic – get ready for a higher education environment

English language proficiency is measured by the IELTS Academic test, which measures whether a candidate is capable of working in an academic, higher education environment. In addition to assessing your readiness to begin studying or training, it reflects some of the features of academic language.

Take this test if you want to:

  • apply for Tier 4 Student Visa at a university that is a Tier 4 Sponsor in the UK
  • work in a professional organisation in an English speaking country.
  • study at either undergraduate or postgraduate level anywhere in the world

A paper-based or computer-based version of IELTS Academic is available. At one of our official test centers, you will be able to take both formats of the test.

It may be necessary to take IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration or IELTS Life Skills if you need a visa to work or study in the UK.

What does the fee include?

We offer free practice tests, exclusive preparation materials, and much more as part of our IELTS test fee.

The course will last 2 hours and 45 minutes (Listening, Reading, and Writing) plus 11-14 minutes of speaking.

Testing format: This test consists of four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. You will be able to take your IELTS test in an official British Council test center if you book with the British Council.

IELTS on paper may offer you the following Speaking test:

  • on the same day as the other sections of the test
  • a day after (on Friday, when the main test date is on Thursday)
  • a day before (on Friday, when the main test day is on Saturday)

An email notification will be sent to you one week before your Speaking test. With IELTS on computer, you can choose the date of your Speaking test at any time.

Duration: thirty minutes plus ten minutes to transfer your responses to the answer sheet

Format: Four recorded audio clips with varying accents.

You will use the following format to write your answers:

  • matching
  • multiple choice
  • sentence completion.
  • diagram labelling

Write your answers to a series of questions after listening to four recordings of native English speakers.

  • Recording 1 – A conversation between two people within an everyday social context.
  • Recording 2 – a monologue in everyday social context, such as a discussion of local facilities.
  • Recording 3 – a discussion between up to four people within the setting of an educational or training environment, e.g. a university tutor and a student discussing an assignment.
  • Recording 4 – A monologue on a subject of academic study, such as a university lecture.

In order to be assessed, you will need to demonstrate your ability to comprehend the main ideas and detailed factual information, to understand the opinions and attitudes of other speakers, to understand the purpose of a word, and to demonstrate how I follow the development of ideas.

Please note:

Timings differ slightly between the computer-delivered Listening test and the paper-based test. Due to the use of an answer sheet in the paper-based test, users must transfer their answers to a sheet. In the case of computer-based answers, this step is no longer necessary.

  • After the end of each part of the Listening test, you will have some time to review your answers.
  • Before the start of each part of the Listening test, you will have some time to read the questions.
  • At the end of the Listening test, you will have 2 minutes to check your answers.
  • The timing of the Listening test is between 30 – 34 minutes.

Duration: 60 minutes

Format:

  • Texts range from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytical.
  • Three long reading passages with tasks (including diagrams, graphs, or illustrations

There are 40 questions in the Reading section. The questions cover skimming, reading for main ideas, reading for details, understanding logical arguments, and recognizing and analyzing writers’ opinions, attitudes, and purposes.

Three long texts are included in this section. They are a mix of factual information as well as discussion pieces and analyses taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. These texts are aimed at a non-specialist audience but are also for people entering university courses or pursuing professional accreditation.

Duration: 60 minutes

Format:

  • One essay task (minimum 250 words).
  • Write a 150-word summary, explanation, or summary of a text or diagram

Suitable for undergraduate students, postgraduates, and those seeking professional registration, these topics will be of general interest to test takers. There are two tasks to complete:

  • A graph, table, chart or diagram will be presented to you, and you will be asked to describe, summarize or explain it. A data set may be described and explained, the stages of a process described, how a device works, or a specific object described.
  • Task 2 – The purpose of this essay is to express your viewpoint, argument, or problem.

It is necessary to respond to both tasks in a formal manner.
