Passports for children under the age of 18
There are two types of passports for minors:
1) Biometric passports:
We recommend applying for a European passport for your child since some countries do not accept the simpler (non-biometric) child passports (Kinderreisepass). The biometric passport for minors is valid for 6 years and can be printed at the Federal Printing Office in Berlin.
2) Child passports (Kinderreisepässe):
As of 01.01.2021, child passports (Kinderausweise) have replaced the older, green version of paper travel documents and are now non-biometric passports issued by the Consulate. These passports are only valid for one year and cannot be issued to children over the age of 12. Please be aware that child passports may have travel restrictions in some countries (for example, it is not possible to enter the United States with a child passport). Therefore, please check with the country you are traveling to before departure to see if they will accept a child passport.
German passports can only be applied for in person by both parents and child. Extensions to existing passports are no longer possible. As of June 26th, 2012, every child needs their own German travel document and entries in parents’ passports are no longer valid for travel purposes. You can keep your existing passport during processing time, if you need to travel and the passport is still valid.
